At first glance you may not notice Lincoln Electric's involvement with this Summer's Euro 2016 football tournament. But the Stade Matmut-Atlantique - the New Stadium of Bordeaux, consists of 12,000 tons of steel that has been welded with Lincoln Electric consumables and equipment.
Hosting five Euro 2016 matches, including one of the crucial quarter finals, the brand new stadium is an architectural wonder. Inaugurated just over a year ago, it can accommodate 42,000 people. It was made with 12,000 tons of steel,
all welded with Lincoln consumables and equipment, by
Castel & Fromaget, French leader of metal construction, who also supplied all the steel structure.
The stadium is distinguished by more than 1000 white pillars representing both the pine forest of the Landes and the Greek temples.
945 piles had to be drilled to a depth of 22 meters, to support the structure of the stadium, built on a former marshland. This constraint has encouraged manufacturers to choose a metal structure, lighter than concrete.
80 tons of low fume metal cored wire
Outershield MC715-H, in diameter 1.2 and 1.6 mm (due to the thickness of some sheets exceeding 30mm), have been used to weld the hundreds of pillars of the building.
The equipment solution retained was invertor based and energy saving Speedtec® 500S along with the wire Feeder LF45. As a multi-process welder, the Speedtec® 500S utilises the very latest power source technology for efficiency and lower energy consumption. 500A rated at 60% duty cycle, it is the ideal solution for Industrial Multi-process applications. Other equipment combination used was the CV510 with wire feeder LF-35, industrial equipment designed for heavy-duty applications.
For the welding of cross beams, because of their different mechanical constraints,
10 tons of
Ultramag have been supplied.
As far as beams welded reconstituted are concerned, they have required
15 tons of
Supramig , in diameter 1.6mm +
10 tons of flux 780. Because high productivity was needed, with low change-over time, the wire was
supplied in 250kg Accutrak drums. The beams were welded in twinarc process with a combination of
automatic welder/feeder DC1000/NA3.
